North Adams Community Schools Superintendent Brent Lehman announced during Tuesday evening’s board of education meeting that staffing cuts for the 2014-15 school year will be fewer than originally estimated.
With many retirements and other staffing changes, only one teaching job — a music education position currently held by Ric Geist — will be eliminated.
North Adams currently has five music educators. Lehman said each teacher was evaluated based on points to establish which teacher’s position would be eliminated. Geist had the lowest evaluation score.
“Ric has been really good about all this. We have had many conversations and he understands the need,” Lehman stated. “They are all such great teachers, but when they are evaluated with a point system, someone is going to have the least amount of points.”
