North Adams Community Schools are in need of substitute teachers.
“Substitute teachers are calling in the day before and cancelling to go to a different school,” Superintendent Brent Lehman explained during the North Adams school board meeting held Tuesday evening. “We had to figure out why this was happening. There were days we didn’t have a substitute, and that is not okay.”
According to Lehman, North Adams has been paying substitute teachers a daily rate of $60 — the lowest among 24 school districts in the area. That pay rate trails other area schools by $10 to $15.
Beginning Jan. 20, substitute teachers will be paid $75 a day if they hold a teaching license and $70 a day if they hold a substitute teacher’s license.
