Minor smoke damage after wood shop fire at BHS

October 8, 2013

The Decatur Fire Department was dispatched to Bellmont High School at 3:40 p.m. Monday when a fire alarm was pulled and smoke detectors in the building were triggered.
The school was evacuated after a drum sander in the wood shop caught fire for unknown reasons, according to a spokesperson for the department. The fire was quickly extinguished, however smoke filled the building making it necessary for firefighters to ventilate the structure before returning to the station at 4:50.
Minor smoke damage was reported and emergency units were called as a precaution. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Also on Monday, firefighters were dispatched to Silberline Manufacturing, 210 Guy Brown Drive, at 8:57 a.m. when hydrant flushing caused the company’s water pressure to drop, triggering the alarms. There was no fire and crews returned to the station at 9:25.
