Michael E. Sommer

    Michael (Mike) Sommer, 63, Yorktown, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. 
    He was born June 16, 1951, in Adams County to the late Rufus Sommer and Martha (Zimmerman) Sommer. He married Pam Lambert Nov. 20, 1977; she survives.
    Mike was a 1969 graduate of Adams Central High School and graduated from Ball State University with a degree in landscape architecture. 
    He joined Rundell Ernstberger Associates LLC, where he worked as an associate for many years. In 1999, Mike became a partner in the firm. He was responsible for managing design, preparing construction documentation and writing specifications, as well as overseeing and coordinating various aspects of the construction process. Mike worked extensively with Ball State University on several of the University’s development projects including the landmark Shafer Tower, the music instruction building, the art and journalism building, the David Letterman Communication and Media Building and several residence halls. He developed the site design and accompanying graphics for a new Vera Bradley campus in Fort Wayne.
    Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, his annual fishing trip to Michigan and working on home improvements.
     He is survived by his mother, of Berne; a daughter, Sada (fiance Daniel Cline) Sommer; a 3-year-old grandson, Mason, of Muncie; and two sisters, Brenda Sommer and Janice (Ernie) Steiner, both of Berne.  
    He was preceded in death by his father in 2001. 
    A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
