Two letters of resignation were received, and accepted, Tuesday evening by the Adams Central Board of Education.
High school Principal Sean R. McConnell submitted his letter of resignation after three years of service, effective June 30. Board members accepted, 6-0, with member John Sipe absent .
The board also approved, 6-0, a letter of resignation from school employee Lisa Black.
In other news, a letter of intent to retire was received, and approved, 6-0, by Data and Grant Coordinator Lisa Black. Black has been an employee at the school since 1993.
A request for maternity leave for the 2012-2013 school year was made by teacher Jeremi Schortgen, who also serves as high school volleyball coach.
Board member Steve Bailey questioned the length of the leave, concerned that approving the request would set a precedent which would prove difficult for the board to overcome in later years.
During a discussion on the matter, Bailey asked Superintendent Mike Pettibone if Adams Central had granted a leave of this length in the past. Pettibone was unsure as to whether the school had in fact approved a leave for an entire school year prior to this request; however Pettibone noted that in his experience with other districts it was not unreasonable.
Elementary School Principal Terri Laurent added that a leave of absence for the school year could prove beneficial for the students. Laurent pointed out that if Schortgen were to return prior to the end of the school year, the students would need to adjust to a new teacher at a time when they will be taking the ISTEP test.
Board members Dave Fox and Steve Maller also expressed concern about the length of the leave.
School Board President Wes Kuntzman agreed that this may be an issue for the board to "keep an eye on," and suggested having the school's policy committee look into the matter for future reference.
The leave of absence was then approved without hesitation, 6-0.
