Mayor praises sculpture idea, result

October 8, 2012

Looking back at Decatur's initial Sculpture Walk, Mayor John Schultz remains excited about the experience and its future.
"Wow! What a great event the first Decatur Sculpture Walk opening turned out to be,"  the mayor said recently. "Being the first attempt at such an endeavor, you really don’t know how the event will actually turn out. I believe the entire sculpture committee was very pleased with how everything fell into place and my thanks are extended to each member of the committee."
The walk was held August 23 as the 12 sculptures were unveiled. All are in the downtown area, some outside and some inside businesses.
"This sculpture event has me more excited about showing off Decatur than any other event in the five years I have had the pleasure of being Decatur’s mayor," Schultz said. "Even weeks after the “opening night” there are out-of-town visitors here in Decatur viewing the individual sculptures.
"The idea was to make Decatur a destination point and it appears that that idea is being embraced."
Schultz said he recently attended a program in Fort Wayne about the development and design of the Headwaters Park.  "As a city, we have no plans for that type of development; in Decatur, but the program opened my eyes to the various possibilities of adding to the Sculpture Walk with other improvements to truly make Decatur a great place to live and to visit," he said.
"So, hopefully, we can expand on the success of the Sculpture Walk with other events to showcase Decatur’s great quality of life."
The mayor also urged people to vote for the People’s Choice award.  Voting ends on November 30.  Ballots are available at the Decatur branch of the Adams County Library, at Adams County Community Foundation and the Decatur Chamber of Commerce.
