Max E. Colchin
Max E. “Lightning” Colchin, 87, of Avilla, formerly of Fort Wayne, left this world on Tuesday, December 25, at Provena Sacred Heart Home.
Max was born on December 26, 1924, in Adams County to the late Fredrick J. and Frances E. (Coffee) Colchin.
On May 3, 1954, he married Margaret Weber; she passed away on August 27, 2012.
Max was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church-Hessen Cassel in Fort Wayne. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 864, Moose Lodge 1311, American Legion Post 43, and the VFW Post 10006.
He worked for 43 years as an experimental engineer in the sheet metal department for International Harvester (Navistar), retiring in 1990.
Among survivors are three sons, Larry E. (Patricia) Colchin of Fort Wayne; Patrick J. (Nellie Landeros) Colchin of Bonita, Calif.; and Neil T. (Lynn) Colchin of Fort Wayne; three daughters, Ellen K. (Thomas) White, Eve M. Colchin, and Anne E. (Dennis) Ulman, all of Fort Wayne; a brother, Maurice “Gabby” Colchin of Decatur; a sister, Lois Sharp of Baldwin, Mich., and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Benjamin Ulman; four sisters and a brother.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 29, from 8-10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church Hessen Cassel followed by a 10 a.m. mass of Christian burial at the church. The Rev. Fr. Cornelius Ryan, C.S.C. and Rev. Fr. Stephen Colchin will both be presiding.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 43 color guard.
