Rescuers from several local agencies flocked to the east side of the Wendell Macklin Memorial Bridge on Monroe St. (US 224) late Monday afternoon after an unusual incident occurred.
Paul Wilferling, 60, of Decatur, was moving himself in a wheelchair on the Rivergreenway Trail when he lost his balance and fell from the chair about 15 feet down a rocky embankment.
Someone spotted him or perhaps heard him yelling for help around 3:30 p.m. and aid was quickly summoned, with members of the police and fire departments as well as the county's EMS coming to the scene.
The fire department rescue unit provided a fiberglass stretcher as firefighters and EMS personnel carried Wilferling up to the trail, after which he was taken to Adams Memorial Hospital in an ambulance. He was treated and released, according to a report today from Decatur police.
