A breakdown in the relay system at an American Electric Power substation on US 224 in Decatur caused a power failure at midafternoon Monday that affected more than 1,400 AEP customers in the city and in the rural area extending several miles west of Decatur.
Dave Mayne, a spokesman at the Indiana and Michigan Power office in Fort Wayne, said this morning that the problem occurred shortly after 3 p.m. and all customers were reconnected by 5:36 p.m.
The outage stretched as far west as the Preble area.
Traffic lights at at least two intersections on busy N. 13th St. were affected. City police erected stop signs on Washington St. and Archbold Road, and on Second St. and Winchester Road. No accidents were reported during the outage.
A number of businesses on 13th St. also were affected by the power loss.
