VAN WERT — Noah Macklin rapped a high fastball to right field for the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing in Cam Voglewede with the deciding run as the Decatur Thunderbird (10-U) Travel team clipped Delphos, O.  10-9 Monday night.
The Thunderbirds, which closed out their summer at 21-1 with four tourney titles, trailed 9-8 going into the bottom of the eighth as Delphos scored a run in the California-style finish. After the two teams tied at 8-8 after six innings and a scoreless the seventh inning was played, the eighth inning started out with a runner at second base for each team.
Delphos, who had been stopped by the outstanding pitching of Voglewede in the seventh inning as he hurled out of a big jam (runner at third, no outs), took the lead on a hit, then Voglewede, later named the outstanding hitter in the tourney, shut the door.
Ethan Corral had made the last out in the seventh for Decatur and was placed on second base. He scored on a bad throw to third after an infield hit, tying the game. With two out, Macklin came up and slammed his line drive to right field to end the affair, which had started on Sunday night was was stopped with Delphos ahead 3-0 in the first inning.
After the game, Voglewede, who had 11 hits in five games with two doubles, two triples and a homer, was given his award for being the tourney's top hitter. Kevin Brown, the starter for the T-Birds Sunday and Monday, was named the Outstanding Pitcher in the Bachman Tourney. He fanned nine in his nine innings of work and was 2-0 for the 5-0 T-Birds.
Earlier in the game, Colin Mills slammed a ball down the third base line and it rolled all the way to the fence. He made it around the bases for a home run. He had two hits in the game.
Brevin Slusher struck out four as the second Decatur pitcher, allowing only three runs on three hits. Voglewede struck out three in two innings, including two in the seventh, walked two and yielded one hit and one run in the victory.
Slusher had two hits and drove in three while Voglewede had two hits. Brown drove in three and had a hit in the game. David Noetzel slammed three hits. Nick Teeple doubled and Mills had a pair of hits. Aaron Lehrman and Macklin had hits.
The T-Birds rallied to go up 6-5, but Delphos fought back. Decatur again led at 8-6, but Delphos scored the tying run in the sixth.
The Thunderbirds won all four tourneys that they entered for the late summer season.
