Mike Macke was recently elected to the Decatur Men’s Golf Association Hall of Fame, just a few days after becoming eligible, while still an active and strong player.
In adding Macke to its membership, the men’s golf association said it recognizes his leadership of Decatur Golf, his work in developing and encouraging young talent, his high quality of play and competitive spirit, and is to be commended for helping to grow and enhance competitive golf in Decatur.
Macke is well known as a coach and teacher of the game, having coached the Bellmont boys teams for 19 years and the girls teams for 17 years, a program he started.  During that time, he took nine boys teams, and three girls teams to Regionals.
He had four individual Sectional champions, had two boys and one girl make it to the State tournament, and had two players make Academic All-State.
He has also operated and helped in junior golf leagues and camps at Cross Creek and Grey Goose courses, helping to keep golf in Decatur vibrant by introducing many young players to the game and teaching them the right way to play.
Mike and his wife, Laura, have two sons, Davis and Zachary, and a daughter, Leyna.
As a golfer, Macke won city titles in 2001 and 2005, and Cross Creek Scratch Match Play in 1993, 1999 and 2008, along with numerous runnerup finishes in city, county and match-play competitions.  He’s been a regular winner of league low-average awards and has been on league championship teams, both at Cross Creek and Grey Goose.
He has played in the State Mid-Am and State Public Links, where he recorded a top-10 finish, and has been an alternate qualifier for both the State Am and State Open.  He was also the first-ever CCMGA Player of the Year.
He’s been an ambassador for the game, serving on the CCMGA Tournament Committee and as an originating Board Member of the Hall of Fame, the hall announcement said.
