M. Mercedes Villagomez

    M. Mercedes Villagomez, 100, of Decatur, died at her residence on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
    Mercedes was born on September 24, 1912, in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico, to the late John and Isabel (Gutierrez) Ortiz.
    On December 25, 1935, she married Anisceto Villagomez; he preceded her in death on May 31, 1986.
    Mercedes was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a homemaker and was a Spanish interpreter for Judge Myles Parrish and a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop 64.
    Among survivors are two sons, Gerald (Alice) Villagomez and Roy (Lorraine) Villagomez, both of Decatur; five daughters, Pauline Medrano, Alice Jean Escamilla, both of Fort Wayne, Isabelle (Joel) Lehrman of Monroeville, Shirley Laguna, and Rosemarie Villagomez, both of Decatur; brother, Louie (Theresa) Ortiz of New Lenox, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
    Mercedes was preceded in death by four children, a brother, and four sisters.
    Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 10 a.m.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father Patrick Joseph will officiate.
    Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
    Preferred memorials are to St. Joseph Catholic School.
