Library Friends plan credit with plaque, display

December 6, 2011

The board of directors of the Friends of the Library in Decatur has decided to place a plaque on the steel sculpture in front of Decatur branch of the Adams Public Library System (APLS) and wall display inside the library to credit all those involved with that work of art.
Greg Mendez, a Decatur artist who works in metal, designed and made the sculpture, which sits on a concrete base donated by Decatur concrete contractor Jim Hitchcock.
The money for the sculpture was provided by a bequest in the will of Dianne Linn, a longtime teacher and school librarian in Decatur.
Other news from a recent Friends of the Library meeting:
    — Sixty-eight individuals and one business hold membership in the group. Fourteen people joined this fall.
    — The organization has more than $5,500 in its bank account, of which more than $2,100 came from the proceeds of the library book sale in October.
    — The board voted without dissent to join Friends of Indiana Libraries.
    — Kelly Ehinger, director of APLS, said there are 237 public libraries in Indiana.
