Lester W. Mitchel, 93 of Roanoke passed away early Saturday morning, April 21, 2012 at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Mitchel worked at City Light & Power in Decatur and then retired from Indiana/Michigan Power Co. in 1983 after 49 years.
He was a WW II Navy veteran serving on the USS Texas as a Machinist Mate 1st Class. He was a member of the Roanoke American Legion Post 160. He attended the Union Church and was a member of the Palomino Horse Breeders of America. He was a member of the Decatur Masonic Lodge, the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and the Mizpah Shrine.
He was also a member of the Shrine Hospital Unit and road in Shrine Horse Patrol.
Lester was born on April 9, 1919, in Adams County, a son of Clarence W. and Ora (Durbin) Mitchel. He was united in marriage to Maxine Drake on January 1, 1939, in Decatur. She preceded him in death on February 3, 2009.
Survivors include a son, David L. (Carol) Mitchel of Lompoc, CA; a daughter, Nancy (Art) Kuenhert of Roanoke; 5 grandchildren: Kristin (Scott) Husband, Kyle (Kelly) Kuenhert, Kevin Mitchel, Kim Rosen and Cory (Kristen) Mitchel; 8 great grandchildren and a sister, Shirley Troutner of Fort Wayne.
He was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Joan Morningstar and Lois Jean Schnepp.
Visitation is today from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel; there will be Masonic Services at 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. IN. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service.
Interment will take place in the Glenwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
Preferred memorials are to Huntington County 4-H or to the Union Church, in C/O Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
