Lester H. Burkhart Jr, 89, of Decatur, died Monday, May 7, 2012, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
Lester was born on August 23, 1922, in Dexter, Kansas, to the late Lester H. Burkhart Sr and Hazel (Fornshell) Burkhart. On April 6, 1947, he married Emma Kathleen Fennig. Lester was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and served as a trustee for 3½ years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 43 and the Moose Lodge 1311 both in Decatur.
He worked as a carpenter with Architectural Builders in Fort Wayne for 20 years, and Strickler Trailer Sales in Decatur for 12 years. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army.
Among survivors are his wife of 65 years, Emma Kathleen Burkhart of Decatur; one son, Gary (Deborah L.) Burkhart of Monroe; one daughter, Lisa L. Kempa of Noblesville; a brother, Charles Burkhart of Marion; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, also at the funeral home, with Rev. Randy Rossman officiating.
Burial will take place in West Lawn Cemetery, Geneva, with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post 43 Color Guard.
