MONROE—The returning champion Lady Jets hosted this season’s ACAC tournament on Friday and Saturday along with South Adams, Leo, and Bluffton.
With the completion of the regular season ACAC schedule, Leo already earned the team championship with a perfect 3-0 mark, while the Lady Jets took second at 2-1, Bluffton third at 1-2, and the Starfires finishing last at 0-3.
Friday’s matches included first and second round contests in singles with the opening round of the doubles matches as well. Saturday morning, the four ACAC squads resumed play for the semi-finals and championships. Conference first and second teams were decided based on the finishes in the tournament. Adams Central finished with a pair of singles players on the first team and one doubles duo while South Adams placed one on the second team.
The tournament seeding is based on a system favoring the number one singles players who each get a bye. The balance was upset this season, however, by a pair of upstart number two players .
After winning her first round match-up against Bluffton’s number three, Sammy Gilliam 6-1, 6-0, AC two player Lydia Johnson took down SA’s number one Maddy Kloepper 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday. Johnson then faced a giant challenge against the number one overall seed Jen Timbrook of Leo upsetting her 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 10-5 in an emotionally charged match.
