A new state law intended to promote Indiana farmers was one of many things touched on by Rep. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, during the May Chamber of Commerce luncheon held Monday afternoon at Woodcrest.
Lehman said he was inspired to write the bill after visiting a restaurant in Vermont that touted using only local produce in their meals.
“I asked them, ‘Well, why? Is this a law?’ and they said, ‘No, this is Vermont. We don’t like things that don’t come from Vermont.’ I wondered if they would take my money, then, but they didn’t have a problem with my Indiana money,” Lehman quipped.
With that thought in mind, he returned to the Statehouse where he began discussions with his fellow lawmakers about promoting Indiana
farms and produce. After studying a similar bill in South Carolina, Lehman went to work on Indiana Grown.
