BERNE— It’s been a long time coming for South Adams, but the girls basketball program has had some success recently. The high school team went a tidy 13-7 this season under second-year coach Brett Freeman and it seems that there is more help on the way in the underclassmen.
The eighth grade Lady Starfires have just finished up their season as ACAC and Adams County champions last year and with a spotless 29-0 record combined in their progress dating back to their seventh grade campaigns, they will look to help the high school team immediately next season.
“This team is very close and in all meanings of the word a team on and off the court,” praised eighth grade coach Steve Dellinger. “They have become family and were just great to coach. Every girl on this team works hard every day to make themselves better but more important each other better.”
Their eighth grade year was cut short by several cancellations in the schedule leaving them 12-0 this season but the group also has had several successes in the off-season tournaments they join.
Team defense has been the mantra for the last two seasons as this group of girls has only allowed an average of 10 points a game for opponents!
Coach Dellinger had some words of wisdom for his group moving forward into high school.
“To the future Lady Stars I say good luck. They will be great teammates and they have the tools to succeed in life on and off the court.”
