Lady Jets win first sectional title
BUTLER—A day after taking out their Adams County foe, the Lady Jets topped that feat with an even greater one: winning their first sectional title ever.
It took extra innings to do, but the Jets managed to squeak by a talented Bishop Luers team in eight innings, 3-2, after a Lindsey McDougall RBI single ended the game in walk-off fashion for AC.
McDougall had been 0-3 in the game before the hit and there was one out with runners on first and second after AC catcher Alyssa Keller singled to center and then advanced to second when the fielder bobbled the ball in the outfield. Good baserunning kept Sammie Baker safe on a fielder's choice as Keller retreated back to second safely on the infield hit putting two runners on setting up McDougall. When Keller crossed the plate safely, the celebration was on for the Lady Jets.
"I'm so excited for these girls!" AC coach Cary Blake stated after the game. "They believe in each other and play as a team. They deserve the sectional championship."
It was a long-time coming for AC as the women of the school continue their successful spring between the sectional champion tennis and softball teams, also a first.
The scoring started early in the game for both teams and did not pick up until late in the seventh. In the first, Luers jumped out to a 2-0 lead when their number two hitter Richard hit a double that was followed up by some fireworks on a Hayes homerun that silenced the crowd at Eastside High School, at least on the AC side.
Luers would not score again.
