BUTLER— South Adams had hoped that the third time would be the charm on Tuesday night at Eastside as they played the Lady Jets for a third time this season but fell after a fifth inning meltdown, 7-2.
Perhaps a better phrase for SA would be, "bad things come in threes."
AC got the best of the Lady Stars in a 5-4 contest early in the season and then during ACAC play, the Jets unloaded in a similar fashion knocking off SA, 7-1 earlier in May.
"This was a tough loss for our team," SA coach Jessie O'Dell commented after the game. "We have had several games this year that were decided because we had one bad inning."
That was the difference in the game for the Stars as the game was well within reach at 2-1 entering the top of the fifth but the Lady Jets rallied for five in the frame ballooning the lead to six runs after senior catcher Alyssa Keller belted a bases loaded triple that one-hopped the fence in right field.
Sammie Baker kept the rally going when she bunted to get on base scoring Keller who slid under the tag during the play at the plate. Baker would eventually score a few batters later.
"Alyssa had the big hits all night," praised AC coach Cary Blake. "That's what seniors are supposed to do."
Bess Fiechter, who went 3-4 on the day stroking big hits for coach Blake all day, scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning off of a Baker single. The Jets would strike again in the third inning when Jenae Blackburn hit a fly ball that just went off the outstretched glove of SA center-fielder Lyndsey Chandler allowing Fiechter to score from second for AC's second straight double.
South Adams tightened the game at 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Alyssa Bluhm singled and then Brianna Nevil doubled. Bluhm advanced home when the throw to third was miscued giving SA a run on the board.
