MONROE — Adams Central's girls basketball team played lock-down defense against Leo to score a huge 50-44 upset in the ACAC game played Saturday at Central, reversing a 36-point loss to the Lady Lions just nine days ago in the ACAC tourney.
"We held a pretty good shooting team to 29 percent and our girls put on a tremendous effort to out-rebound a much bigger 37-29," stated Central Coach Sam Beer.
"I'm very proud of the resilience our girls showed, bouncing back from a 36-point loss to Leo in the ACAC tourney, and a 30-plus point loss to Eastbrook earlier this week," stated Beer, whose Jets are now 7-10 on the season. Leo slipped to 10-8 with the stunning loop setback.
Bess Fiechter had a double-double, leading the way with 14 pounds and 11 rebounds while guarding 6'1" Kiana Gary, the Lions leader with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Madison Carroll added 12 points for the Jets while Jenae Blackburn scored 10 and Olivia Macklin six points. Alyssa Keller added five rebounds, four assists and three points. Mary Fox had four points and two assists.
"Fiechter set the tone defensively and our guards did a great job of helping down inside. Carroll and Keller both did a great job of getting us into our half-court offense as leo was switching defenses frequently," praised Beer.
The Jets trailed 16-8 at the first stop, cut the lead to 27-22 at half and outscored the visitors 19-9 in the final quarter to secure the victory.
