Lady Jets handle Blackhawk Christian, climb over .500
Monroe— The Lady Jets of Adams Central found themselves back over .500 for the season with an impressive win against the Blackhawk Christian Braves last night in a non-conference volleyball match-up.
The Lady Jets, now 8-7 (3-2 in conference), made a clean sweep of things in front of their home crowd at the Hanger by defeating the visiting Braves in three games, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19.
AC was led by the stellar play of their front court blockers. The Jets' stingy defense continually stamped "return to sender" on kill attempts by the Braves frustrating the visitors and causing many unforced errors.
Leading the defense was promising freshman Haley Gross who finished the night with two blocks and two assists to go along with seven kills and four digs. Sophomore Abbey Lichtle and senior Alyssa Keller also contributed a block with two assists also coming from Keller and senior Chelsie Eads.
While the games were not blow-outs, it was clear that Adams Central set the tempo and flow of the match from the start. Just when it seemed as though AC would pull away, the Braves would rally back within a few points to keep the games interesting.
Lady Jets head coach Jeremi Schortgen commented, "We really have to work on stopping opponents from making runs like that. It is really a momentum killer when you have such a good lead but then let them come back."
The best example of this came in the second game after the Jets were up 13-7 only to see that lead vanish and allow Blackhawk to take their first lead of the match. The Jets eventually came back from a 19-14 deficit to finish the game on an 11-4 run to deflate the Braves' momentum.
It was much the same story in the third game as the Jets had a comfortable 19-12 lead that was answered by a 7-1 run by Blackhawk to make the score 20-19 AC. After a timeout, AC came out and scored the last five points of the match to seal the deal.
"We have a young team. Each game it seems like we are getting better at striking the ball and being in the right place," Schortgen stated after the match.
Leading the offensive for the Jets was junior heavy hitter Bess Fiechter who had nine kills as well as five digs and two aces, one of which was the finishing touch on game three. Gross and Eads both had seven kills, while Lichtle and freshman Whittney Peterson each had six kills. Keller finished with two aces and 11 digs to go along with an impressive 27 assists. Sophomore Abby Snyder contributed 11 digs and a kill as well.
Adams Central JV was also victorious on the night with a 25-18, 25-14 sweep of the Braves' reserves. Leading the way for the Lady Jets was Jenny Schultz with eight kills and nine digs, Madi Schwartz with five kills, seven digs, and 14 assists, and Kaitlyn Johnson with three aces and two digs. The JV improves to 15-5 with a perfect 5-0 mark in the ACAC.
The Lady Jets will remain at home for their next contest on Monday as they host the Lady Knights from Norwell with a 6 p.m. JV start and the varsity immediately following.
