GARRETT — The Lady Jets flexed their muscles against another ACAC opponent on the volleyball court Tuesday night sweeping the Garrett Lady Railroaders 25-13, 25-18, 25-17.
Adams Central moves to 3-0 in the conference and have not dropped a set in league play yet this season.
"We've done well so far but we'll have a test on Thursday," noted AC coach Ashley Beard of the Woodlan match looming later this week. Woodlan is also 3-0.
Against Garrett, the varsity match began nearly 20 minutes before scheduled start due to the junior varsity's dismantling of the Railroaders in two sets allowing just 13 points to the home team's reserves.
The varsity contest felt no different out of the gate with the Lady Jets leaping to a 3-0 start, then 5-1 and 8-3. Throughout much of the first set Central traded points two and sometimes three to one holding Garrett to minimum damage at the net.
Garrett's early strategy was to try and get passes and sets to their heavy hitter, Masyn McCray, a 6'0" senior, but Beard and the Jets were ready for the game plan.
"Garrett is a good team and their best player, McCray, was going to get her kills at the net but we wanted to limit her good looks at it," explained the AC coach.
Anna Burkhart served up one of her two aces near the end of the first set after a Whitney Peterson kill to make it 14-6. After a sideout, Jenni Baumer had a nice kill down the sideline followed up by a pair of Abbey Lichtle bombs straight to the floor for a big 19-8 lead.
Despite Garrett playing even for the final 11 points at 6-5, AC had already done the damage necessary to pull out the first set.
