Kukelhan candidate for circuit court judge post

    Adams County attorney Chad Kukelhan has announced that he is seeking the Republican nomination for judge of the Adams Circuit Court.
    Kukelhan is the first announced or filed judge candidate. The current judge, Frederick A. Schurger, a Democrat, has not announced if he will seek a new term.
    Kukelhan is a 1991 graduate of Bellmont High School and began his studies at IPFW in Fort Wayne in 1992. He said he made his way through college by working for the local Stanley Steemer franchise and graduated from IPFW in May 1997 with a degree in political science.
    For the next year, Kukelhan worked in the Bill of Materials department at Thunderbird Products.
    He married Laura Heckman on June 13, 1998, and the couple moved to Spokane, Washington. Kukelhan and his wife returned to Indiana and he graduated from Indiana University in the spring of 2001. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
    Kukelhan and his wife moved to Indianapolis where, he stated, he gained valuable courtroom experience while working for the Marion County Public Defender Agency, He remained employed there until 2005, before returning to Decatur.
    He joined the law firm of DeVoss, Johnson, Zwick, Baker and Ainsworth and began working for the Adams County Public Defender's office in January 2009, where he continues today.
    In February 2010, Kukelhan moved his private practice to 227 N. 13 Street in Decatur. He said in making the announcement that he prides himself in efficiently managing his caseload and representing his clients on a daily basis in both the superior and circuit Courts.
    "I will use my courtroom and office skills to manage the Adams Circuit Court. The court is my home and it is where I feel most comfortable," Kukelhan said.
    "If elected, my extensive courtroom experience, both in Marion and Adams counties, will guide me in making quality decisions where I will weigh the facts against the law and render timely decisions. Further, I will be fair, consistent, and impartial when administering the law."
    Kukelhan said he is active with his family and enjoys spending time with his wife and kids. He is a member of St. John's (Bingen) Lutheran Church and is a former board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Adams County. He is a member of the Adams County Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association.
    Kukelhan is the son of Edward and and Kathleen Kukelhan, of Decatur, and has two sisters.
