Top seeds Courtesy Motors of Decatur and Ossian White opened their Adams-Wells Koufax Baseball Tournament quests Tuesday night after completion of the first round of games Monday.
Courtesy hosted the Bluffton Elks last night at Worthman Field in the top half of the bracket winning convincingly, 14-4 in six innings. The home team scored in every inning except the third putting up three in the first and four in the second to take an early 7-3 edge. After the scoreless third by both squads, the Elks scored their final run in the fourth only to allow Courtesy to score four more in the fourth, five in the fifth and finally a final run in the sixth to end the game on a 10-run mercy rule.
Danny Baker earned the win on the hill for Courtesy throwing six innings and allowing four runs on five hits with two K's and three walks. Grant Prible took the loss for the Elks in four innings of work allowing 11 runs on 14 hits, two K's, and three walks. Drew Mitchell pitched two innings of relief allowing three runs on four hits with three walks.
Courtesy's Baker did it with the bat as well as he had with multiple hits including a second inning triple, while Austin Knous tripled in the fourth. Justin Jauregui (double), Adam Weaver, Knous, and Baker combined for 12 of the team's hits.
In the lower bracket, Ossian White was at Worthman Field taking on McIntire Heating & Air of Decatur in the 7:45 p.m. contest coming away with an 8-5 victory over the higher-seeded squad.
McIntire opened the game up with two in the top of the first only to cough up the lead to Ossian who scored three in the bottom half. Four runs in the top of the fourth gave McIntire the lead for good as they led 6-5 after four. They would add two more runs in the sixth for insurance securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Corbin Burkholder started for McIntire going two innings and allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Jordan Amacker relieved for five innings and earned the win allowing no earned runs on five hits with nine K's and four walks. Ossian White's Perkins started the first three innings but earned a no-decision in the contest allowing two runs on four hits with three K's and a free pass. Rick Rittmeyer took the loss allowing six runs in three frames on six hits.
Manny Brewer's double in the fourth was the game's only extra base hit.
Erie Haven, second place overall in the standings in the regular season, met with the Monroe HME Crushers at Monroe. The top bracket winners will play at Worthman in a 7 p.m. semi-final tonight. Bottom bracket winners will clash at Monroe at 7 p.m. this evening. The title game will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Worthman Field.
In action Monday, McIntire Heating downed Ossian Silver and the Crushers stopped South Adams Black. Both won by the 10-run rule.
At Bluffton, Parks downed Monroeville 17-6 and the Elks ousted Monroe Corner Deli. Harvestland of Monroe stopped Ossian Gold 18-9.
