Kerry R. Smith

    Kerry R. Smith, 59, of Poe, died at 3:10 p.m. Friday at his residence.
    Kerry has been an inspiration to many for having been an 18-year survivor with brain cancer.
    He was born on June 2, 1952, in Fort Wayne to Ross W. Smith and Doris J. Elzey Smith. His father is deceased; his mother, now Doris Schlaudraff, lives in Hoagland.
    He married Karla Myers on April 11, 1980, in Poe United Methodist Church and she also survives.
    He was a farmer and an employee of Water Furnace International in Fort Wayne.
    He also was a member of Hope United Methodist Church at Hoagland and the Poe Volunteer Fire Department.
    Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Randall (Stacey) Baker of Poe and Mrs. Jeremy (Melanie) Dearringer of Carmel; one grandson, Gunnar Dearringer of Carmel; two sisters; and two special friends, Murl Keidel and Shawn Kendregan.
    The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Hope United Methodist Church at Hoagland, with Pastor Stacy Downing officiating.
    Burial will be in Williamsport Cemetery at Poe.
    Visiting hours are 1-4 and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home at Decatur and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday in the church.
    Preferred memorials are to Hope United Methodist Church and to Visiting Nurse and Hospice on Homestead Rd. in Allen County.
