MONROE—Led by a "monster" home run to left field into the wind by Alyssa Keller, the Adams Central Jets posted a 3-1 ACAC softball triumph over Southern Wells Monday evening at the AC diamond.
Keller's solo shot in the bottom of the fourth as the leadoff hitter for Adams Central broke up a scoreless pitching dual between Sydnee Peterson of the Jets and Crista Carter of Southern Wells.
The batter of the game for the Jets, however, turned out to be Lindsey McDougall in the sixth inning. After refusing to quit in her battle against Carter, McDougall rapped a two-out, two-RBI single on the 12th pitch of her at bat scoring teammates Sammie Baker and Olivia Macklin with what proved to be the winning runs of the game.
Baker had walked to leadoff the inning while Macklin put down a bunt single. Alexa Baller sacrificed the runners up a base before Carter got the second out with a strikeout bringing McDougall to the plate.
Southern Wells had tied the game up in the top of the sixth on a delayed steal. Carissa Carter reached base on an infield hit and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by sister Christa Carter. Kayla Banter reached first on an infield single moving Carter to third. The Raiders then sent Banter to second and she was thrown out but Carter scooted home on the play with the only SW run of the game.
"The girls had some really good at bats tonight. McDougall's single was a key and Baker also had a great at bat to lead off the sixth. Keller's homer was a monster," exclaimed AC coach Cary Blake. McDougall finished the night with a pair of hits as did Mary Fox.
Peterson held Southern Wells to just four hits in the game including a pair by Carissa Carter. She whiffed nine batters while walking only one. Carter also struck out nine for Southern Wells and walked a pair.
Adams Central improved to 12-6 overall with the win.
