CHURUBUSCO—Blade Kable sank a three-pointer from the top of the key at the end of overtime to give the Flying Jets a thrilling road victory over the Churubusco Eagles to open their season Wednesday night, 58-56.
The Eagles' Brent Simmons shot two free throws with 10 seconds to play in the overtime and 'Busco down two points. After sinking the first Simmons missed the second but managed to snag his own rebound and his putback gave the Eagles a temporary lead at 56-55.
The Jets pushed the ball up the floor with time winding down eventually swinging to the 6'7" Kable at the top where he made the last, but not the first big shot of the night for the Jets.
Kable ended with 13 points but his most important work came down the stretch. In regulation towards the end of the fourth quarter with two minutes to play the Jets faced a 43-40 deficit when Kable's three-pointer tied the game.
At 1:10, Nick Baumer hit two freebies to give Central a two-point lead. The Eagles would respond with 20 ticks on the clock remaining as Blake Gross hit a lay-up off of an inbounds play to tie the score at 45-45.
Baumer had a decent look from seven feet out that missed from wing that would have won the game in regulation but the Jets made the most of their opportunities in the extra period.
