John E. Girard

    John R. Girard, 76, of Decatur, died on Saturday, December 25, 2010, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    John was born on July 16, 1934, in Paulding, Ohio, to Adrien J. and Genevieve (Artz) Girard.
    On September 11, 1954, he married Rita C. Rumschlag. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2007.
    John was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and the Holy Name Society and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 864 in Decatur.
    He was the threshing director for 25 years for Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association at Portland.
    He also had worked for Central Soya in maintenance and was active in construction and farming.
    He is survived by a son, John J. (Mary Catherine) Girard of Monroeville; five daughters, Jo Lynn (Keith) Hiester of Decatur: Jeannie (David) Byers of Columbia City; Mary L. (Richard) Arend of Wolcottville; Rosanne “Po” (Ed) Dawson of Decatur; and Maggie (Rod) Hawkins of Decatur; a sister, Maxine Grimm of Fort Wayne; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
    John was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Girard; a sister, Mary Alice Pruitt; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
    Visitation is 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 2:30 p.m.
    An 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father David Voors officiating.
    Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Decatur.
    Memorials are to the Rita Girard Music Scholarship Fund within the Adams County Community Foundation.
