John E. Gillig

    John E. Gillig, 81, of St. Anne Home in Fort Wayne, formerly of Decatur, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born in Decatur on June 29, 1929, to Leo T. and Florence L. (Kohne) Gillig.
    He is survived by five brothers, Al Gillig of Decatur; Tony (Ruth) Gillig of Decatur; Dave (Mary) Gillig of Fort Wayne; Don (Barb) Gillig of Jerome, Michigan; and Jerry (Joan) Gillig of St. Joseph, Missouri, and two sisters, Rosemary (John) Sheley of Danville, Indiana, and Marcella (Ron) Smith of Bluffton.
    He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur.
    He was the former pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and also served at Our Lady of Hungary in South Bend, St. Monica in Mishawaka, St. Jude in Fort Wayne, Sacred Heart in Fort Wayne, and Holy Family in South Bend before retiring in 1988.
    He was chaplain of the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Fort Wayne Fire Department, the Allen County Sheriff's Department. and the Indiana State Police.
    Visitation is 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home in Decatur, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m.
    Visitation will also be held from 11 a.m.-noon on Friday, July 1, 2011, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur, followed by a noon Mass of Christian Burial at the church. Officiating will be The Rev. Fr. Stephen E. Colchin.
    Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Decatur.
    Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur.
