Adams Central's Isaiah Bollenbacher stepped over Bellmont's Fletcher Shaneyfelt, scoring a 2:32 fall in the 220-pound match, and that did it.
The Adams Central bench and crowd erupted as the Jets clinched the dual meet victory at the Teepee Tuesday night, snapping a 22-year losing skein to the Braves. The Jets, rated No. 1 in Class A, won nine of 14 matches to score a convincing 41-26 victory.
"Like I told the radio guys before the meet, there were a whole bunch of stuff up for grabs. We just won a few more of those," summarized veteran Central coach Doug Schultz.
"We had situations that went against us, and they won the big matches," said Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, who took his first loss against Adams Central since 1989.
"We had a pretty good streak. There were many years when it was on the line and our kids stepped up. Tonight, bottom line, we didn't get the job done. Adams Central did. Credit them."
Persistent Adams Central wrestlers scored a pair of amazing comeback wins in the middle of the match, and that put the Jets in charge. In a battle of 10-5 seniors, AC's Zac Yoder kept the pressure on and took advantage of a late stalling point to nip Jacob Bergman in overtime. At 160 pounds, AC's Kaine Luginbill was on his back twice, but he bounced back for a 4:56 fall over Brett Baker.
"We wrestled with a lot of heart," stated Jets' senior Cody Walburn, who tied the match at 12-all early on with a 40-second full tilt of Diego Hutker at 126.
"Luginbill was about to get majored and came back with the pin and the 10-point swing. It was real neat. We had a couple of good ones. Zac Yoder won in overtime. Bellmont is a good team, so it was a good victory," said the former state streeter, now 16-0.
