Jets seek to even score on ACAC mat
Adams Central started the ACAC campaign with a narrow loss to Leo, but the 1A state champion Jets can get a share of the loop crown by taking care of business at Saturday's tourney at South Adams.
The Jets have four top seeds, two seconds and 12 overall to the three firsts, three seconds and 10 overall of Leo. South Adams, also a contender, has three top seeds and three seconds with nine overall seeds.
The Jets are defending champs, having won both the dual meet season and tourney a year ago.
"I'm not going to call us the favorite because we still have to go out and win it, but we have the depth to get it done. I think we can score in all 14 weight classes," stated Jets' coach Doug Schultz.
"In two or three classes, we need to wrestle above our seeds, and everyone else needs to wrestle to their seeds."
Since 1975, Adams Central has won or shared 30 ACAC wrestling championships. The Jets have been outright champs 18 times. From 1979 through 1996, the Jets won 17 out of 18 championships, sharing only one, in 1987.
The Jets shared the title in 2010, but did not win or share the title from 2007 through 2009.
Top seeds for the Jets include defending champ Cody Walburn at 126, Derek Ellinger at 138, Kaine Luginbill at 160, and defending champ Ben Pfister at 182.
Andy Oliver at 113 and Luke Liter at 152 are seconds seeds.
For South Adams, returning champ LJ Moser, who is just back from a five-match suspension, is a top seed at 120 and is unbeaten at 16-0. Sawyer Miller is No. 1 at 113 and Klayton Hinshaw is top seed at 170 pounds. Eric Pimentel at 126, Mavrick Morningstar at 220 and Mason Morningstar at 285 are seconds seeds.
For Leo, Aaron Eicher tops the 152-pound class, unbeaten Nolan Wilson is No. 1 at 195 and Bryce Hagar is tops at heavyweight.
"AC and Leo really have the horses to be the front runners," admits South Adams coach Eric Myers.
"I like our seeds, though, and if our kids really come to wrestle they'll be able to compete. We have a few kids who can improve on their seeding, but at the same time the rest of our guys will have to wrestle to their seeds."
Miller, Mavrick Morningstar and Hinshaw have all been past runners-up in the ACAC.
