Jets outlast Luers in five setter
MONROE — Abbey Lichtle stroked the ball through the Bishop Luers defense for the final point of the evening, capping a huge Adams Central win in a five-game showdown with the Lady Knights.
"I am very proud of my girls," stated Adams Central coach Ashley Beard.
"We struggled with our defense and our serve receive, which are typically some of our stronger points, and even with our serves, but we still fought back and overcame it. We've been talking about that. We wanted to play a good team where we had to fight back and win, and that's what happened tonight."
The Jets won two of the first three games, dropped the fourth, and took control in the second half of the fifth game to score the critical 15-9 win.
The Jets battled to a 26-24 win in the key first game, fell the second 16-25, and won 25-20 in No. 3. Luers won 25-17 in the fourth to set the stage for the final game.
Two key blocks by Jets' senior Bess Fiechter put the Jets up 6-4 in that fifth set. Kills by Knights MacKenzie North and Jenna Hoch helped Luers cut the lead to 8-7.
Frosh Jenni Baumer then connected from the left side for one of her four kills on the evening. A Luers' hitting error and a Whitney Peterson kill through the Luers' block made it 11-7.
The teams exchanged hitting errors, then Baumer scored on another attack for a 13-8 margin. Madi Schwartz, who had 33 assists, three aces and two block-assists, then scored to put the Jets within a point.
Senior Kat Welling the broke through for Luers with an attack, but the Jets got in the final punch with Lichtle.
