James E. Sturgeon

    Rev. James E. Sturgeon, 72, of Rockford, Ohio, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday in his residence.
    He was born on June 21, 1938, in Howard County, Indiana, to William E. and Thelma R. Wilson Sturgeon.
    He married S. Joann Burgan on May 31, 1959, in Kokomo and she survives.
    He was a member of Praise Point United Brethren Church in Willshire, Ohio, and retired in September of 2003 as a pastor with the United Brethren in Christ Church. He served as pastor of New Hope United Brethren Church in Huntington, Park United Brethren Church in Bluffton, Calvary United Brethren Church in Rockford, and Decatur United Brethren Church.
    During college, he served at Salem United Methodist Church in Wabash and, prior to becoming a minister, he worked from 1956-70 for Chrysler Corp. in Kokomo.
    He was a 1956 graduate of Western High School in Howard County and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1974 and a master's degree in Christian ministry in 1975 from Huntington College (now Huntington University).
    Other survivors are one son, Joe Sturgeon (and wife Ronda) of Haughton, Louisiana; two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Deborah) Holmes of Adrian, Michigan, and Mrs. Mark (Janette) Buzzard of Huntington; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Paul Sturgeon, and one sister, Nina Townsend.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Praise Point United Brethren Church at Willshire, with Pastor Wes Kuntzman officiating.
    Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford.
    Visiting hours were held Sunday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
    Preferred memorials are to State of the Heart Hospice at Coldwater, Ohio, or to Camp Cotubic Youth Camp and Retreat Center at Bellefontaine, Ohio.
