Jail talks: Back to square one?
There’s a new player in the game.
After several months of eliminating nearly a dozen potential sites for the proposed new county jail/court complex and narrowing the location to several blocks of 1st Street in downtown Decatur, a new site was back-handedly revealed by the Adams County Commissioners at their weekly meeting Monday afternoon.
The door has apparently been opened for negotiations with the Porter Family Foundation for a parcel of land directly east of the Woodcrest Retirement Center on the south side of Decatur — between Mercer Avenue and the St. Marys River.
But the announcement was not so straight forward.
Late in Monday’s meeting, during the Judicial Center update portion of the agenda, Commission Chairman Doug Bauman began his report innocently by commenting, “I think we’re getting close to making a final decision on a (jail) site. We have a joint session with council scheduled on June 10. We are doing some investigation on a property, getting some soil borings and getting some study done on possible use of some ground,” he said.
