The biggest piece of news to come out of Tuesday night's Decatur City Council meeting had nothing to do with ordinances, sewers, fire protection and the like. Instead, it was the pending retirement of the city's water superintendent for the last 17-plus years, Jim Inskeep.
Inskeep is stepping down effective May 31, after 41 years with the department.
He joined the department under Mayor Harry Hebble, making a little over two bucks an hour, and replaced Wayne Carpenter as superintendent in 1996.
Tuesday's council meeting was his last while holding the water department post, and Inskeep came in for praise for numerous people.
