IHSAA votes to remove team tourney at state

November 16, 2011

Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote

The IHSAA's decision to drop the Team State Wrestling Tournament following this season is a huge disappointment to 24-year Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, while Adams Central coach Doug Schultz and South Adams mentor Eric Myers have different takes.
The Braves have earned 14 (out of 16) Team State Finals berths and have earned multiple placements in the meet, and have beaten very strong Yorktown teams in two of the past three years. No other team has had as many Team State entries as Bellmont.
"I am disappointed about losing the Team State series. After this year,  we will be going back to the old tournament scoring," stated Faurote.
"The 1995 season  was the last year we used this scoring. We were state runner-up and that was a year after our state championship in 1994. We have been fortunate to have success with both scoring styles, but I think the  Team tournament is better," said the Coach.
"Coach Faurote (Bellmont) has the opportunity to participate in that (tourney) every year, and I understand why he's upset. But for a small school like us, it gives us an opportunity to participate and compete at a state level," said Adams Central veteran coach Doug Schultz.
The coaches were hoping that the state, instead of dumping the tourney, would break it into as many as three classes, which is the case in most other states.
Bellmont, which will have to replace six of seven wrestlers at the heavy end of the lineup, is set to open Tuesday at home with Columbia City. Adams Central, with 11 starters back, will open at Leo on Dec. 1. South Adams, which should be strong again, will open at the Homestead Duals on Nov. 26.
