The annual Kids Against Hunger campaign will be boosted again this year by people working in Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School north of Decatur.
An announcement said the event on Saturday, April 16, will have two shifts to pack more than 40,000 meals, two-thirds of which will go to needy people in Adams, Wells, and Allen counties. The other third will go to other countries.
The meals include rice, soy, vitamins, minerals, and dehydrated vegetables. An announcement from organizers of the event said the food mixture is easy and safe to transport, simple to make with only boiling water, and culturally acceptable worldwide."
The shift times will be 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. Organizers are looking for at least 200 volunteers (100 per shift) to assist with the packing.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for families," organizers said in making the announcement. "Whether you are eight or 80, there is a job for you."
Each person wishing to volunteer should call Cindy Wass,, (260) 623-2209 or contact her by e-mail at wassfarm@gmail.com by April 10 and say which shift he or she wants to work.
So far, leaders of five local food banks have asked for donations of meals: St. Joseph Catholic Church's Food Pantry at Hessen Cassel, Monroe United Methodist Church, Hope United Methodist Church in southern Allen County, The Lord's Table Food Pantry in Geneva, and Project Share at Berne.
Organizers are also seeking musicians to perform in the school gym, such as a "praise band" or a group to play Christian or patriotic songs. Those interested should call Joe Gorman, (260) 706-0999 as soon as possible.
Anyone wishing to donate money to Kids Against Hunger to offset the $12,500 cost of the effort should make checks or money orders payable to Kids Against Hunger and mail them to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church (Friedheim), for the attention of Kids Against Hunger, 10653 N. County Rd. 550 West, Decatur, IN 46733. Donations must be mailed before March 31.
