Housing development gets city’s OK

    With two council members absent, the remaining three members of Decatur City Council were busier than usual making motions and seconds and issuing approvals on Tuesday night.
    With Bill Crone and Ken Meyer unable to attend, Charlie Cook, Matt Dyer and Cam Collier gave the okay to several ordinances and one resolution. Ordinances passed on two readings earlier and approved on Tuesday night included:
    • Rezoning from A-1 (agricultural) to R-1 (residential) an area of some 92 acres near Common Ground Church, on the corner of Piqua and Bellmont roads, and the Crossing at Bellbrook apartments. Biggs Property Management is planning a housing development, Bell Brook, there. To be developed in phases, it is expected to wind up with approximately 200 units, beginning next spring with 30 in the first phase.
    • The proposed 2014 city budget, set at $7,543,726, with a proposed tax rate of $1.3944. The proposal now goes to the Adams County Council, which will routinely approve it, and then it's on to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF).
    • Rezoning from R-2 (residential) to B-1 (business) a property north of Best One Tire Center at US 224 and E. Monroe St. The business is losing much of its parking lot to the state project elevating 224, and will have the home on the rezoned property razed for additional parking lot.
    An ordinance passed on two readings and tabled until the October 15 meeting will establish a non-reverting operating fund for the parks and recreation department, allowing it to set aside funds for bus trips.
