Adams Memorial Hospital's radiology department has completed the process for obtaining a three-year accreditation in nuclear medicine from the American College of Radiology (ACR).
A hospital news release said this is the first time the hospital has received accreditation for nuclear medicine, which is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material administered to patients to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases, including cancer and heart disease.
Four other divisions of the hospital's radiology program are also accredited by the ACR: computerized tomography scanning, ultrasound, magnetic resonance image scanning, and mammography.
Dr. John Pasalich, medical director of the Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH) radiological department, said in the news release, "The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR practice guidelines and technical standards."
A hospital representative added, "As part of the accreditation process, AMH underwent a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in their field. Imaging quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, and quality control procedures and assurance programs were also reviewed in depth."
AMH has two registered nuclear medicine technologists: Rose Colchin and Krista Connor.
The American College of Radiology serves more than 34,000 medical specialists in the United States.
