Hospital board seeking to sell onetime bank building

October 29, 2012

Anyone interested in a prime spot of real estate in downtown Decatur with access to a state highway and plenty of free parking?
The Adams Health Network (AHN) doesn't have a bridge to sell you, but it does have a landmark building in Decatur to offer, having recently announced it plans to sell its former Health Services Complex at Second and Monroe streets downtown. Prior to the hospital owning the building, it was for many years occupied by the First State Bank of Decatur.
Local attorney Adam T. Miller, who serves as legal counsel for the AHN board of trustees, revealed the terms of the sale for prospective buyers at the AHN trustees' meeting Wednesday night.
Miller said an open house will be held on November 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for members of the general public who wish to inspect the building. The building features two floors plus a large basement area for storage and has elevator access to all floors. The building has been empty for several months.
The building is being sold "as is," according to Miller, with one of the few restrictions being that any new owner may not use the building for health care or a health-care related business without the written consent of the AHN trustees. This restriction will be written into the deed and will last for a period of 20 years.
Interested parties have until 2 p.m. on November 16 to submit a sealed bid for the building. At that time, trustees will open the bids and place them under advisement.
Miller said the trustees will act on the bid process. He added the hospital reserves the right to reject any and all offers and is not obligated to accept the highest offer.
A copy of the purchase agreement for the real estate is available in the hospital office of AHN President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Nordwick. Questions concerning the title and/or legal requirements should be directed to Miller: 724-2154.
