Hornets take pair from softball Jets

    MONROE—Adams Central was on the short end of 4-3 and 6-1 tallies in a varsity softball doubleheader played Saturday against Angola at the AC diamond.
    The opening game went extra innings with Meghan Schwartzengraber's two-out double scoring the game-winner in the top of the eighth. Schwartzengraber also homered for Angola in a three-run fourth off losing AC hurler Sydnee Peterson and went the distance on the mound to collect the win with seven strikeouts.
    Adams Central had jumped out to an early 3-0 edge with one in the first and two in the third but Angola tied it in the fourth to send the game to extra frames.
    For Adams Central, Jenae Blackburn had three of the five Jet hits including a double and she also had the only RBI for the team while scoring two of their three runs.
    In the nightcap, Angola scored once in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth before AC's Alyssa Keller could cross home plate in the fourth. Angola outhit AC 11-5 in the game (all singles) with Bess Fiechter the only Jet with a multi-hit game with two singles.
    Peterson started for AC but was relieved in the fourth by Fiechter. Zachrich went the distance for the Hornets for the win.
    "We played well defensively but just couldn't come through with the big hit in either game. We get better by playing teams like Angola," noted AC coach Cary Blake.
    Adams Central is now 11-6 on the season after the twin-bill loss.
