Holdup suspect Sain arraigned

July 28, 2011

Caleb B. Sain

A Wells County man with a rural Geneva address, Caleb B. Sain, was arraigned in Adams Circuit Court on Wednesday in regard to a robbery committed on July 18 at the Walgreen Pharmacy in Decatur.
Sain, 23, has pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery and possession of a controlled substance and was set by Judge Frederick A. Schurger for an omnibus hearing on September 30 and for trial on November 4.
The judge also set Sain's bond at $75,000 due to the serious charges here and because he faces two charges in Wells County in an unrelated case: public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance.
In addition, Schurger appointed the Adams County public defender's office to represent Sain, since he cannot afford to hire a lawyer.
Adams County Prosecutor Chris Harvey said he added the substance possession charge based on a video from the Walgreen store that allegedly shows Sain being given two containers of a painkiller called Opana after he reportedly demanded the drug from a pharmacy employee and allegedly said he was carrying a gun.
However, according to Harvey, Sain did not show a gun to anyone in the store.
After he was identified as a suspect, Sain was contacted by Decatur police Detective Mike Mahan. Sain agreed to turn himself into authorities at a motel in Fort Wayne. So Mahan and Lennie Corral, a veteran Decatur police officer recently promoted to detective, drove to Fort Wayne and picked up the suspect.
Of late, Sain had been living in Berne.
