The largest geographic feature in Monroe could be called "Mt. Monroe," a long, high mound of earth dug up from several acres bought in 2010 by town officials to make a storm-water detention pond on the south side. The pond site will be dry most of the year, but will hold a large amount of storm water after heavy rain to lessen flooding problems in the community. Fleming Excavating of rural Decatur did the digging. The size of "Mt. Monroe" can be gauged by the perspective of the one-story storage building at the far left. The earthen mound also has become popular with sledders.
