Adams County Engineer and newly appointed Highway Department Superintendent Tim Barkey appeared before Adams County Council Tuesday morning to ask their approval of a restructuring of the highway department staff. Councilors, however, were not too keen on Barkey’s desire to create two assistant supervisor positions for the department.
Barkey asked councilors to “increase the salary of the assistant superintendent and approve an additional assistant superintendent for me to do what I proposed to the commissioners to manage the highway department.” The county engineer was hired by commissioners last month to replace retiring Superintendent Mark Mitchel, offering to do so at a weekly salary of $300 ($15,600 annually).
Barkey indicated both assistant positions would be salaried, recommending current Assistant Superintendent Shaun Roe’s pay be increased from its current level of $39,256 to $41,856, while proposing the second assistant superintendent be payed an annual salary of $39,256. The two positions would be paid the same in the 2016 budget, Barkey suggested.
