The HERO Meals program, a private organization of local volunteers whose goal is to alleviate child hunger throughout the North Adams school system, will operate again during the upcoming school year.
HERO Meals volunteers, with the financial assistance of private donations and business partnerships and a stipend from the Adams County Community Foundation, prepare and sends home on Fridays during the school year an assortment of nutritious, non-perishable food with qualifying students to bridge the gap for students and families who often have little or no food available to them over weekends and holidays.
Karen Carty, who helped launch the program, told school board members on Tuesday evening that the group supplied more than 1,500 bags of food last year during the 33 weeks the program was in operation. Carty said funding is in place to run the program for a second consecutive year.
