The "perfect race at the perfect time" earned Bellmont sophomore Alexis Harvey All-State status in girls track, it was noted today by Bellmont's veteran track coach Carl Risch.
Harvey sped to fourth place at last Saturday's 200 meter final at the IHSAA Girls State Track and Field Meet held at the IU Track Complex in Bloomington..
Not only did Harvey gain a lot of respect, the fourth place earned her first team All-State status in her event, noted Risch.
It's even more impressive when it is noted that most other states have class state meets in track. Harvey had to compete with the very best athletes from the biggest schools in Indiana, and more than held her own.
She ran a 24.83 to re-set the Bellmont record she has established several times. She ran 25.03 at the Northrop Regional for second place to earn her shot at state.
"In the state meet, everyone is fast. You can basically throw away the seeds. It was a tremendous performance to come away with fourth place as a sophomore," pointed out Risch. Harvey had the seventh fastest time in the trials to earn her spot in the finals.
Harvey qualified for the state meet as a freshman, but did not make the finals of the 200. She was 100th of a second from qualifying Saturday for the 100 finals, placing 10th overall with a school record 12.36.
"Some of our coaches were there, as were several of Harvey's teammates. They were all proud of her," said Risch.
The coach feels that the 24.83 in the finals might rank Harvey in the top 50 all-time performances in the event at the IHSAA State Meet.
Harvey has not been a year-round performer in the past. However, she may keep running this summer for several weeks.
"We're looking into that now, joining a club team," noted Harvey. "I might run for the Fort Wayne Express.  I want to especially work on my blocks (start)."
