Harvey places in Indoor State meet
MARION—Bellmont's Alexis Harvey finished in the medal round of the 55 meter dash Saturday at the Hoosier State Relays held at Indiana Wesleyan University's Troyer Fieldhouse to be the only participant from Adams County to score.
Harvey posted a 7.51 speed in the finals for seventh place (the top eight advance to the final round) out of 29 runners who had qualified for the indoor state finals event.
That time was .12 slower than her time at the Jay County Qualifier held the previous Saturday at Anderson University but coach Carl Risch said her effort "was superb" in the fact that Alexis missed school Monday through Wednesday after becoming ill a day after the Jay event.
Her time at Anderson was 7.39 which broke the old Bellmont school record for indoor meets but Risch quickly pointed out her run Saturday at Marion would have broken the record as well (record heading into this year was 7.53).
Adams Central and South Adams also had representatives at the indoor meet. For the Jets, Summer Harvey finished 12th in the high jump at 4'10 McKenna Macklin took 31st place in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.95. The hurdles competition was eventually won by Skyler Carpenter of Westview, who is a defending state champion in three events--the 100 and 300 hurdles and the long jump.
On the boys side of the ledger, Bellmont's Evan Boucher and South Adams' Evan Liechty both made it to the indoor finals in the 3200 run but neither made it to the medal round. Boucher captured 26th with a time of 10:20.92, six seconds better than his race at Jay County, while Liechty, who advanced to the cross country state finals last year for the Starfires was 33rd in 10:34.10.
The SA boys also sent two relay teams to the finals with their 1600 relay crew of Cole Farlow, Tim Lehman, Marcus Rich, and Dom Richert just missing out on a medal with a tenth place finish in 3:37.78. The distance medley relay foursome of Joel Hawbaker, Logan Steiner, Isaac Werst, and Brody Shane ended up 25th with a 12:06.24 clocking.
Bellmont opens its regular outdoor track season Tuesday night with a boys and girls meet at Bishop Luers. Their second meet won't be for another two weeks as they host Adams Central and Jay County on April 5 at Bob Worthman Stadium.
