Harold D. Smith

    Harold D. Smith, 79, formerly of Geneva, passed away at 4:56 p.m. on Wednesday, February  2, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Center in Berne.
    He was born on Saturday, October  3, 1931, in Adams County to Godfrey and Laura Opal McFarren Smith.
    Mr. Smith did construction and brick mason work for his company, Smith & Rodenbeck.
    He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Geneva for 60 years and was head trustee and Sunday School superintendent.
    He had been a farmer for many years and was active in many building projects in Geneva over the years.
    He married Jean E. Manning on December 23, 1950, at the Nazarene Church in Berne. She survives.
    Other survivors include two sons, Douglas Smith (wife, Barbara) of Geneva and Aaron Deon Smith of Geneva; one daughter, Jody Smith of Geneva; two sisters, Grace A. Whetstone of Bryant and Veda M. Ewart of Geneva; one brother, Tim Smith of Greenfield; one daughter-in-law, Tonya Smith of Geneva; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Godfrey and Laura Opal McFarren Smith; two sons, David and Ricky Smith; three sisters, Catherine E. Summers, Mildred L. Boice, and Jane Knipstein; and four brother, Floyd L. Smith, Walter A. Smith, Harry V. Smith, and Mac Smith.
    Arrangements are being handled by Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, 100 N. Washington St., Geneva, where family and friends may gather to share and remember from 2-7 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, 2011, and from 10-11 a.m. on Monday, February 7, 2011.
    A service to celebrate Harold's life will be held at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 7, 2011, with Rev. Keith Schreffler officiating.
    Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Geneva.
    Memorials are to First United Methodist Church in Geneva and to Family Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeast Indiana at Berne.
