Bellmont High School product Brian Hakes had a busy and productive Fourth of July weekend of baseball with wood bats.
Hakes, a catcher-third baseman with the John Jackers of the Fort Wayne Federation League, drove in 15 runs with three home runs, two doubles and a pair of singles in five games as the Jackers finished second in the Firecracker Classic at Carrington Field in Fort Wayne. Hakes, who had five RBI in the Jackers' first tourney game, drove in all three of the team's runs as they were edged in Sunday's title game by the Fort Wayne Expos, 4-3. Whitko coach/Decatur native Erik Hisner was a member of the Expos.
After playing two games with the Jackers earlier Sunday, Hakes hustled over to his home field at Indiana Tech University to play for the Indiana Collegiate Baseball League all-stars against an all-star team from the Roy Hobbs League of Northeast Indiana, for players 18 years old and up.
Playing third base, Hakes had a triple and single, was walked and hit by a pitch in six trips, drove in two runs and scored three, leading his team to a 14-5 win. He was named the college team's Most Valuable Player.
Hakes, 20, who earned all-conference honors as a catcher for Tech last spring, will be a junior there this fall. He plays for the Northeast Kekiongas in the summer collegiate league, in addition to the Jackers.
